Intro
Hello readers!
I’m River Riley, sophomore at UCM. My major is sports reporting and broadcasting but this major is brand new to me because I was aviation and then undecided last year. I come from Harrisonville, Missouri where I lived my whole life. It’s a pretty similar town to Warrensburg but without the college. At home are my 2 parents. My two older siblings are moved out and practically on their own. My sister is 27 and my brother is 31 so most of my time at home it felt as if I was an only child. There’s been a lot of uncertainty for me recently because I can’t find a true passion that sparks my ambition but I can feel a new leaf is turning. Most people would describe me as a very strongly opinionated person so I hope that I can just turn that attitude into most of my posts while keeping you readers invested.
This first post will be more of an introduction than a typical rant but I intend to keep my posts centered around a few topics that spark some thoughts.
Local Football: Football is one of my favorite sports as I grew not only playing tons of it, but watching tons of it. The two local teams that I support are the Kansas City Chiefs and the Mizzou Tigers. The seasons are yet to start but the chiefs have made some notable changes over the off season so fans are curious to see the new-look AFC West Champions. For Mizzou expectations usually aren't high but we have seen one of the best recruiting classes in the nation this year thanks to 2nd year Coach Drinkwitz.
Greek Life Experiences: I did not intend on being involved with Greek life when I first came to UCM as a freshman but my hometown buddy introduced me to Sigma Phi Epsilon. Greek life here isn't the same as most schools you might see. Although the concept is all the same, I feel more comfortable in the fraternity environment here than I would anywhere else. We'll have numerous events and activities going on through this semester that I will be sharing about in this blog.
Budgeting Myself: Spending money is easy for me because my philosophy is to enjoy now and worry later. I began the summer out pretty broke but I was able to save up a good sum of money. However, $5000 of that will be going to the car that I am buying from my sister. My summer job said that I can still help on the weekend from time to time and I also umpire softball so hopefully I can maintain a steady income. I will mostly be discussing purchases that may have been unnecessary and different things I do to make and save money.
Sports Broadcasting Class: 90% of our grade in this class is dependent on the broadcasts that we do for the school, which includes every single home sporting event. I am required to go to 15 games and be a part of the broadcast team. This opportunity has me nervous but excited at the same time because this is a totally new experience for me. I'll update my progress in skill and also any cool stories from the games.
Included will also be some other notable happenings and thing that I may find interesting so that the posts don't become repetitive. Although my interests may not appeal to everyone, I hope that what I have to say is helpful, informing, or at least entertaining!
